Saving Face August 17, 2015 When I started my blog I did it for fun. I did it to get some of my pent up creative energy out. I most certainly didn’t do it because I was a great writer (most of you know that due to all my spelling mistakes) and I didn’t go into it expecting it to become a business – truth be told, I didn’t really even expect it to be as much work as it is! Though it’s a bigger project than I had anticipated, I wouldn’t change the experience for the world, because through my journey blogging I found self acceptance! That might seem cheesy, so bear with me, but it’s true! Some people come out of the womb gorgeous (I.E. Angelina Jolie, Miranda Kerr, and all the rest of my girl crushes) but for those of us that weren’t born to look like goddesses right out of the gate, I’m here to tell you it’s ok! About 90% of women (and men) have gone through an awkward phase at some point in their lives. You know that time when you want to burn all the pictures because you weren’t really sure why you plucked all your eye brow hairs out (wait maybe that’s just me), but that time comes to pass with everyone, and all of a sudden that awkward little person turns into one kick ass human being! I will admit I was one of those people! My awkward phase lasted about 5 years – all of which I usually try not to remember – but when I emerged I came out a better version of myself and a bit stronger! If I showed you pictures from when I was in high school, you would have not believed that I was the same person – some people honestly don’t- my hair blonde, I had crocked teeth, and I had acne worse than anybody I knew! Aside from already being awkward, once I started to assess the situation it got worse. I went from having bright blonde hair to black, and I went from having crooked teeth to having braces for two years – the situation just didn’t seem to be getting any better! Now, I realize that these are all aesthetic things, and that true beauty comes from within, but try telling a 17 year old that. Kids in high school are MEAN! They will take any excuse they get to put in a jab here and there, and especially since I was from a small school, I had no choice but to see the same assholes everyday! All the things that kids get tease for are esthetic normally, and I realize that looks aren’t what matters, it’s what’s on the inside that really counts, but as a woman, I know that we still care about what we look like – especially since that’s how we are raised. We are all raised to love makeup, shoes, and clothes, to play with dolls, and make sure we don’t get dirty – well at least that’s what I hear, I was raised in a very different household, but all the makeup, shoes, and clothes just came naturally to me – it’s almost like it was in my blood 🙂 Thankfully, if we are lucky to have a great support system none of the outer appearance stuff matters, and we can go on living our young lives in peace but not everyone was as lucky as I was to have amazing friends and family, so I’m here to tell you to stop caring what other people think about how you look and just what makes you happy! If you feel good that’s all that should matter! Running a blog and being self conscious are just two things that can’t exist together, so I got over myself real quick! I realized that I was in my own head telling myself I needed to change a lot more than other people were, so I trained myself to just not care what people thought! It’s really quite the freeing feeling should you ever want to give it a go – I mean think about it, you won’t have to worry if you look 5 pounds heavier because the photographer got you at the wrong angle or you were having a fat day that day, you won’t have to worry about what other people think about your outfit – if you want to dress like a 90 year old grandma you go for it, if you want to dress like Beyonce you go for it – the possibilities in life are endless! Now don’t get me wrong ladies, I still want you to look nice and take care of yourselves (this is a fashion blog after all) but just don’t be stuck on the fact that you believe only one type of beauty or self-confidence exists. This will come in baby steps so don’t get discouraged. I have come to except myself, but I still can’t take a damn compliment, so it’s really give and take here ladies! Hopefully this post helps to get you on the right track to excepting yourself 🙂 ** Side note, self confidence does not mean thinking your shit don’t stink. There is a huge difference between being humble and being a jerk. Remember this phrase that my mom taught me; “Never be COCKY, but always be CONFIDENT” This is also the true reason that a lot of the pictures on the blog are of me not looking at the camera – I honestly go sick of looking at my own face over and over again – bottom line, I won’t be making my own Kim Kardashian selfie book any time soon…… Photos By: Samantha Jean Photography Crop Top & Skirt: Azeeza // Clutch: Michael Kors (Similar Style Here) Lip Stain: Healthy Skin Breanna RELATED POSTSSummer SkinCareTravel Guru Emily Cleary’s Top 5 Travel Must-HavesMoving Sucks!
