Closet Case June 13, 2015 Once upon a time I moved into my apartment with a really small closet. So small that I had to take over the coat closet in the hall and still didn’t have enough room. I had handbags, shoes, and jackets galore, and with no organization in sight! Then one day my fairy godmothers came to save the day, and the fashion blogger lived happily ever after! Best, or worst fairytale ever – you decide – but, one thing holds true, the ladies from style by deco came and saved the day! Moving from a house where I had plenty of wiggle room to a small apartment in Old Town was already challenging enough ( I hate moving) but the lack of closet space was a HUGE problem! Not only that, my roommate shares the same love for fashion as I do -meaning our apartment was more likely to have shoes in the cabinets than dishes! Though there aren’t really shoes, in our cabinets ( ok, just on top of our shelving in the living room) we still had no room! When I reached out to style by deco, I warned the ladies that it would be a challenge, but they were definitely up to it! I warn you, closet cleansing is not for the faint of heart, and especially with these ladies! They know more about me now than I would have excepted going into this. It was definitely like a therapy session. I also found out that I have an emotional attachment to half the things in my closet – not a healthy relationship to have by any means. Debbie and Emily took no prisoners – they would hold up an item and I would have to say “Yes”, “No”, or “Maybe”. Each item went in a separate pile and they would sort through one piece at a time. It was great because for pieces I wasn’t sure I wanted to keep they gave me their honest opinion. If they thought I should keep it, they would give me styling tips of what to pair it with, or they tell me that putting a piece back in my closet was a bad idea. All I had to do was stand there, sip on my Starbucks, and make cut throat decisions about what was going back in my tiny closet. Though we agreed on most things, there were a couple pieces that we hard to let go of even though I hadn’t worn them for years! So now I am officially saying good bye to my pink floral Coach cross body bag (don’t judge, it was my first “big” purchase when I was 14), my high school athletic gear, (I am obviously no longer a cheerleader) and to a couple of very interesting Chicago Bears gear getups (what can I say I love my team). After two hours of continuous back and forth, I was in a state of euphoria! My closet was clean! My handbags were neatly stacked, and everything was color coded and arranged by sleeve length – how did I get so lucky! Not only that, but these ladies stuck with me until the end, another trip had to be made later with more supplies for organizing and they were happy to work around my schedule! In this post you see all the harsh realities of closet cleaning, but I cannot wait to share the AFTER pictures with you! The transformation is truly amazing! I will also be chatting about the changes I’ve made since freeing my life of un-needed clothing as well!
